Nissan . How to Time a GTOThe 1969 Pontiac GTO featured a 6.6-liter eight-cylinder engine. The classic Pontiac GTO along with its classic engine can and still is used today by car enthusiasts. The engine will only work if it is consistently maintained, which includes adjusting the ignition timing. The ignition timing of the internal combustion engine determines when a spark will occur to start up the engine. The timing for the 1969 Pontiac GTO is 9 degrees before top dead center, or "BTDC." You can adjust it with a few tools but be careful not to damage any parts of the engine during the process. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Timing light Wrench Wheel Chocks Step by Step : 1 Turn your GTO on by placing the key in the ignition. Make sure there are no cars around and you have enough space to work on the engine safely. Turn off all accessories in the car. 2 Use wheel chocks to chock the wheels of your car. Put the transmission in neutral and firmly engage the emergency brake. Gradually bring the engine to an idle speed of 650 rpm if you have an automatic transmission or 800 rpm if you have a manual transmission. 3 Exit the car with the emergency brake firmly engaged and open the hood to the engine. 4 Connect the timing light to the car's battery by placing the red clip on the positive terminal first and the black clip on the negative terminal second. Next, connect the timing light to the number 1 spark plug and the main crankshaft pulley. 5 Observe where the timing mark on the pulley falls. You can cease all operations and bring your GTO back to its normal state if you are satisfied with the current ignition time. 6 Locate the distributor lock-down bolt. It should be located at the base of the distributor housing. Loosen the lock-down bolt with your wrench and disconnect the distributor vacuum hose from the distributor housing. You can now adjust the ignition timing safely. 7 Use your hand to rotate the distributor until the timing mark on the pulley drifts into the time you want. 9 degrees is the factory recommendation so do not drift too far from that time. 8 Reconnect the distributor vacuum hose once you have set the ignition timing and tighten the distributor lock-down bolt your wrench. Remove the timing light from the pulley, number 1 spark plug, and battery. Remove the wheel chocks and return your car to its normal state.

Connect the timing light clamp to the number 1 spark plug wire connected the the engine's cylinder head. Shine the light on the timing index of the pulley connected to the engine's crankshaft to check the ignition timing. 5 Observe the timing mark to see what the ignition timing is. You can leave the ignition timing alone and bring your car back to its pre-operation state if the timing reads 15 degrees but you can also adjust it. 6 Use a wrench to loosen the distributor lock-down bolt, located at the base of the distributor housing. Disconnect the distributor vacuum hose from the distributor housing, but be careful not to disconnect the other vacuum hoses. 7 Rotate the distributor until the timing mark on the pulley falls to 15 degrees. 8 Use your wrench to tighten the distributor lock-down bolt and connect the distributor vacuum hose back into the distributor housing. Remove the timing light from the main crankshaft pulley, the number 1 spark plug and the battery. Remove the wheel chocks from your Prelude's wheels.
